Development of the U Street Historic District began in the 1860’s in response to the city’s strong demand for housing after the Civil War and continued with the expansion of the Federal government at the end of the 19th century. At the turn of the 20th century, U Street came to be known as Black Broadway and was so grand that old timers said “to go there, you had to wear a tie”. Duke Ellington called it home, and other greats such as Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Cab Calloway, and Nat King Cole appeared regularly at the Bohemian Caverns and Club Bali. Redd Foxx and Miles Davis performed at the old Howard Theater. The 1960’s brought James Brown rocking the WUST Radio Music Hall which is now better known as the 9:30 Club.
